Here’s the second performance we filmed with BaylisGray by Newton Faulkner in the bowels of Exeter University earlier this month. This one’s called ‘Where To Start’ and is taken from Newton’s new album ‘Studio Zoo’.
No swearing this time….and it’s in colour for those that didn’t understand the medium of black & white :p
Having filmed a couple of tunes with Mr Faulkner earlier in the day, it seemed rude not to stick around and enjoy cheap beer courtesy of one of the Exeter University student bars and take in the show.
Sam Brookes kicked off the night with a superb set. Taking the majority of tracks from his new album ‘Kairos’ the audience was treated to a glimpse of a star on his ascendance. The drawback the the high stage, my short stature and Sam and his drummer being rammed right at the front of the stage meant that pit photos weren’t great as most pics were just of Sam’s bogeys :)
After a short break Newton Faulkner hit the stage to a suitably welcoming reception. I’ve always felt an artist as unique as Newton has to be seen live to appreciate how good he is. It’s hard to capture the live performance in a recording studio and I’ve always felt that his albums pale in comparison to seeing him live. Tonight was no exception. Rattling off a set choc full of old faves as well as new tracks from Studio Zoo; we were even treated to his trademark inventive covers with a Massive Attack mainstay ‘Teardrop’ preceding Justin Timberlake’s ‘Like I Love You’. It’s possibly not going to be long before the Cornish audiences are treated this effortless show.
